Athena Marie Rink

In 2023, after 35 years in the New Age, I had a life changing conversion to Christianity. As a long time artist who painted solely for the purpose of self expression, I began praying for a way to serve God through my art.

 

One day I came across icons online. I had never seen them before... or if I had, they hadn't made an impact. Until now. In that moment I heard a voice within me say: "you are an iconographer."

 

I attended my first iconography workshop a few weeks later, fell in love with the mystical process of creating an icon, and never looked back.

I study with The Prosopon School of Iconology, writing icons in the traditional Byzantine style using egg tempera, 24 k gold, and natural pigments.

Writing icons is a form of prayer that helps me direct my focus on God. While I still paint in my own "darker" expressive style, the sacred practice of icon painting has brought a beautiful balance to my art & life.

I live in the Monterey Bay Area of California. When I'm not painting you can find me acting in the theatre, dancing, novel writing, or singing in the choir.
